Bengali "Sorshe ilish"/ Hilsha Fish Curry with Mustard paste

Sorshe Ilish is a Traditional dish in Bangladesh. "Sorshe" means "Mustard" and ilish means "Hilsha" in Bengali language.
It's made from our national fish "Hilsa" or "Tenualosa ilisha", a type of herring, cooked in mustard gravy. The dish is very popular among the people in Bangladesh. Ingredients

  1. 3 pieces Hilsha Fish
  2. 2 tablespoon Mustard paste
  3. 2 tablespoon chopped onions
  4. 3-4 green chillies
  5. 1/2 teaspoon green chilli paste
  6. 1/4 teaspoon termeric powder
  7. 1/4 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  8. 2 tablespoon Mustard Oil
  9. 1/4 teaspoon Coriander powder
  10. Water as required (to taste)
  11. Salt as required

Steps

  1. Take a Frypan,put mustard oil and heat it. Put the chopped onions and salt into it and fry untill onions become lite brown.

  2. Now put ginger garlic paste, Coriander powder,termeric powder and green chilli paste into it and fry for 1 minutes.

  3. Now put Black Mustard paste and mix properly.Put some water and stir continuously on stove.

  4. Clean the Hilsha fish and cut into medium pieces. Take 3 pieces of fish and wash them throughly with water.Drain them and keep aside.

  5. When mustard paste is stir fried properly now put the pieces of fresh Hilsha fish into it with some more water as you required and cook untill the fish is 80% boiled.

  6. Now put 2-3 green chillies and cover the Frypan.Cook more 5 minutes in a medium low flame.

  7. When Hilsha fish is 100% cooked, stop the stove immediately. Sorshe ilish is ready to serve. Enjoy it hot with steamed rice.
